What and how to see on your own from Hersonissos
Friends, good afternoon! My name is Margot, my mother (50 years old) and I are planning a vacation in Greece from May 11 for a week. We want to see the sights on our own by public transport. Any advice on how best to do this? We plan to stay at the Anissa Beach Hotel in the village of Anissaras (3 km from Hersonissos). And yet, maybe someone knows how high the probability is that we will be able to swim in the sea in May? Wouldn't it be very cold? Thanks in advance for your replies!

In May, the water is still quite cool. In 2010, from May 19 to May 29, it was +19 (at the end of the holiday it rose to +21), but it was very warm, so you can definitely sunbathe. I would recommend you to rent a car in a ren-e-car (they are at every turn) for a couple of days - so you can travel around the entire island without losing time. There are a lot of attractions in Crete in almost every village)) Have a good trip!

Mom has a license, but she doesn’t know how to drive, so, unfortunately, it’s unlikely to be able to take a car .. but I would really like to :) Thanks for the answer!)

You can try to rent an ATV or a scooter. I have a license, but I have practically no driving experience, so the car was immediately swept aside. I regretted that I did not try to take an ATV, because. they are driven there by all and sundry, they are very stable and safe. And the traffic in Crete is not particularly intense. In general, next time I will take it for sure :) Well, if you are really afraid, then public transport is no problem at all :) At the station in Heraklion there are booklets with all the timetables in any direction.

Try to charm someone from the hotel management. Tell us how excited you are about Greece in general and Crete in particular. (I hope this is true). In case of success, either the rude manager himself or his brother-in-law can take you to interesting places, and either for free or much cheaper than an excursion. Another option. Make friends with some of the guests. People from the former USSR are preferable. It's easier to find a common language. The ideal option is if a potential acquaintance ends his vacation. In this case, the family people are already tired of each other and are eager to talk to someone new. Communicate, and sit on the tail when new acquaintances take a wheelbarrow and go somewhere. You will pay a maximum of 1/2 rental and gasoline, a minimum - you and your mother will be invited for free as interesting fellow travelers. I myself used the first option (though in Turkey) and, with pleasure, I was a "victim" three times in the second. And once, in order to take fellow travelers with me, I rented a minibus instead of a golf class. Didn't take the loot. Took by talking and "listening" to my chatter. Good luck.

P.S. 12 = one second, i.e. half.

Crete definitely needs to be driven and driven, so find interested parties and share the financial costs of renting a car.

Margo, great advice, but if (quite by accident) you don't have a desire to enter into personal relationships with the local population for the sake of sights, or find tourists with rights who are interested in the company, then it is quite possible to ride the bus. We perfectly traveled half the island on buses, because the rights to storage are with the valiant gayts)) Quite without problems and not particularly tired, you can visit Heraklion, Rethymno, Chania, Agios Nikolaos ... I remember again - I will unsubscribe)) I will answer questions )

And yet it’s cheaper and more convenient to drive a car! I’ve been to places where tourists don’t go at all! Write - I will answer!

and no one argues about the obviousness that a car is MORE CONVENIENT than a bus (even at home, even on vacation))) and more places are available, but not cheaper - definitely))) and the point is that people DO NOT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY to use a car. .. now do not go anywhere at all?

at a minimum, you can ride a train to the old Hersonissos, take a bus in Malia in the old port, and then further to Agios Nikolas. In the other direction, ride to Heraklion. Sometimes you have to wait for a bus for half an hour - this may not be very convenient for mom.
Swimming is still cold in May. A jacket is required in the morning and evening, because it is cool.
