My friends went by car (in 2006) from Ukraine to Croatia via Hungary. In terms of visas, this is the easiest, you only need to get a Hungarian transit visa, this is less troublesome. The less borders you cross, the easier it is :)

Hello! We went to Makarska Riviera (Bashka Voda) from Ukraine by car. We drove through Hungary - very quickly and conveniently - a continuous autobahn - speed 200 - we arrived very quickly. On the way back we stopped for a couple of hours in Budapest - walked around the city - the beauty is indescribable !!! You need a Hungarian transit visa or a Schengen visa.
