It is better to take excursions even before a beach holiday, the hotel is far from the center of the country, where the main excursion routes pass. I regret that we did not go to Halle on our own, from the bus station. You will probably go for a ride along the river. We paid $25. for two, there was no one else in the boat, the guide and the boatman. Like two hours, but they strive to take you from the river to the spice garden and the jewelry store - this is all wiring, refuse right away. Two hours means two hours. I liked the colonial estate on the river, the mangroves, took a tour from the beachboys, to be honest, it's not worth the money. Look at the lizards in the hotel, there are a lot of them on the river bank, they are huge.

Thank you very much for your reply. We are leaving on September 18th. We are thinking about buying a sightseeing tour right away, which is much more expensive. Or buy a beach holiday and go on excursions from the hotel. Thanks again. Olya.

I am surprised people! They fly across half the world to sit at the wheelchair???!!!! So fly to Turkey - and get the same sea and the same hotel.
If you already find yourself there in another civilization, then it’s just a sin not to see Sigiriya, bot. garden, watch the tea grow. A tour of the country should be taken without even thinking, since we are going there. Moreover, the tour is you, the driver and the so-called guide. Those. fatally private tour.
You can contact local guides - I have a friend there who has been living there for 3 years already - went for a month and settled there for a long time - they will organize a trip around the country for you, and then check into a hotel - you will get double pleasure - and you will see the country (By the way really very beautiful, albeit a beggar) and rest.

From Kalutara (Tangerine Beach) we went with a local guide along the route Kalutara-Kandy-Sigiriya-and back Kalutara. Amazing. The two of us, driver and guide. Two days. Overnight in Kandy. Decent hotel (also called Kandy). Havchik is included in the price. In principle, I liked everything, but if I took a tour now, I would take "4 days of excursions around the island, and then 7-10 days of a beach holiday." Not much more expensive but less thoughts in my head.

Dear friends! Thank you very much for the replies. The decision was made. We watch the country for 5 days, and then we rest in a beach hotel for 5 days. I think it's optimal.

Just take an English-speaking guide (If there are no problems with the language) a Russian-speaking guide is usually a 3-week course in a Russian cultural center and they know no more than 20 words - or collect information yourself in advance!

Well, you’re in vain ... Many locals graduated from universities in Russia and Ukraine, which means they speak Russian no worse than you and me, at least without much tongue-tiedness. Maybe we were lucky, but all three guides that we saw did a good job with Russian speech.
аватар astashov
Probably lucky! We had the opposite situation - we took English speakers everywhere - it was impossible to understand Russian speech there. Yes, and I think that it is unlikely that a person who graduated from a university in Russia will work as a guide - for a person with a higher education there is a much better paid job there.

Friends! Thanks for the comments. The tour operator promises a well-spoken guide. I hope this turns out to be true, as English is tight. But just in case, I’ll read about the sights in advance. All success!

If you provide your personal email address, I will send you a detailed description of the route around Fort Galle: you should get out of Bentota there (by tuk-tuk or regular bus - they go along the highway past the entrance to the pier of your chosen hotel! - safe and inexpensive!), because Fort XVI -XIX centuries - one of the most interesting "tourist places" of Lanka.

In fairness, I note that the issue of the quality of excursions in Lanka is quite acute: with an increase in the number of PR tourists, much more guides are required than -4 years ago. In addition, many travel companies provide individual tours: 2-3-5 people. in a car with a driver and a guide. The option 'driver cum guide' = driver-guide in the version with Russian for 10 years of work on the island I have not yet met, although English / German. and even Japanese is quite common.
It is the Sri Lankan graduates of the universities of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus or (those who are older) of the Soviet Union who work with RY tourists. Less often - those who graduated from Russian language courses. at the Russian Cultural Center in Colombo. All of them must be licensed by the Ministry of Tourism.
At the same time, the quality of language proficiency is different, as well as knowledge of the material and the ability to present it interestingly may differ. I had to work on the route with talented and well-trained guys, but there were also those who spoke rather weakly and talked about the object boringly, without inspiration. And all the pathos of his work was reduced to a visit to shops or souvenir shops. This - alas! - is found not only in SL and in Asia as a whole, but also in Europe.

In Sigiriya, we were accompanied by local guides who spoke Russian no worse than our Moscow, practically local Azerbaijanis (the so-called "citizens of Moscow"). They speak the language very well, provided that they have never been to Russia. Well, the story of Sigiriya itself is quite worthy of a post-payment of 1000 roupias.

For lelya_kaz:
I am forwarding my mini-guide to the fort. in decent Russian. walk in good health! Without post-payment of 1000 rupees))

Lanka-Lanochka please tell me. I'm sitting here and reading almost all the reviews and come to the conclusion that it is best to relax in Bentoto ???? , and also seduces Villa Romantic, where is the hostess Natalya, and that tours can be traveled with her ??

2 Damir: Perhaps the beaches in Beruwala and Bentota are the best of those south of Colombo.
As for Villa Romance, I can’t say anything - I simply don’t know.
Excursions are definitely worth ordering immediately when booking (route). As you know, the radial scheme of movement (hotel - tourist object - hotel) is tiring for Lanka, and good guides are in great demand)) Especially in the high season.
We have a guide to Halle for "internal use" (I compiled them for our individual tourists), but so be it, I'll send it in the evening ;-) still my favorite place, and excursions around it are still weakly led.
Best,
LL

thank you very much, yesterday I read your correspondence with "rara" for a long time, now you were hooked))))) , we were also in Goa, and in the Maldives, and everywhere the rest is different, and you can’t measure everything with the financial side, I think so, but the financial side is not the last, thanks again

2 damir: sent a travel guide to Galle.
As for the correspondence - today it’s already funny to remember this, but then it “hurt” ... But everyone has their own priorities and favorite places under the sun))
I stay in touch! There will be questions - send in a personal.
