Good afternoon!
First of all, I would advise you to book an excursion program. Sri Lanka really has something to see! But in order not to spoil your vacation, you need to order it here, in advance, from trusted tour operators, because. in Sri Lanka there is a problem with guides and transport. The operators working with this direction already have their own proven team of guides and drivers, including Russian speakers, in whom you will be sure.
Meals are better to take half board (breakfast + dinner), because. during the day, people usually go on excursions or spend time on the beach, so you can dine in some cafe, try seafood. But it’s better not to refuse dinner, because there is practically no nightlife in Sri Lanka and it is better to give preference to dinner at a hotel than at a city restaurant.
Sri Lanka is a wonderful country with very friendly people, so don't worry, you will get the most pleasant experience :)

If we compare Sri Lanka and Pattaya, then Sri Lanka has a more relaxed holiday, there is no such freedom of movement. It is better not to rent anything, the Sri Lankans have their own rules of the road that are not clear to our perception.
The similarity is that they are as kind as the Thais.
Sri Lanka is very beautiful and there really is something to see and something to be surprised. Have a nice holiday.

1. Sri Lanka is not like Thailand.
2. You do not need to take food with you. You won't die of hunger there. But cigarettes (if you smoke) and alcohol (if you drink) you need to take. Cigarettes there are 2-2.5 times more expensive than ours, and alcohol can only be bought in specialized stores. In this way, the government is fighting for the health of the nation.

In general, I am a very positive person and I never look for "cons" in the rest and do not do everything all the way. So I will say how I feel.
Sri Lanka is an excellent country, it is the most wonderful nature, chipmunks, monkeys, elephants, etc. Yes, indeed, it is better to take excursions in advance at the agency. But to be honest, it won't protect you from someone beyond your control. As we had, everything is fine, wonderful, we had a few days of rest at the Bentota Club hotel. We took all inclusive. I liked it very much, and the hotel itself is good, to get to it, you will be transferred to a boat and you will swim across the Bentota River, it turns out to be such a peninsula. There are many, of course, lizards, but this is not particularly scary, although I am afraid of them, but chipmunks! Mmmm, I miss them so much. The food is good, the animators are primitive. We celebrated the New Year there and went on excursions. They are worth visiting. Only the most important. The people there are not positive! Where does all this come from? They are greedy, extortionate, constantly not enough for them! After all, the island has recently become a resort, after the war. Therefore, people there are wild, they are not used to tourists, they consider tourists stupid people from whom you can extort and extort. You give them 5 bucks, they ask for 20 and keep up.

And they can follow you for a whole kilometer. In general, horror. Of course, in no case will they offend you, lead you into dark alleys and beat you :) In this regard, yes, they are positive :))
So, on the last day we went from an excursion to a hotel near the airport. It turned out that we were going to some other hotel, where we were not expected. This guide disappeared quickly and that's it. Told us a random time at which to be. to go to the airport. We did not believe and thank God. With difficulty, we found people there who were flying with us on the plane and stole from them the time, which was 2 (!) Hours earlier than this moron said. As a result, we had less than an hour to clean up after the road, eat and pack up. As it turned out, we were not even on the lists. I'm afraid to imagine what could happen to us.
I don't scare, and I won't hysteria :) I wish you a good rest, I'm sure you'll like it, but also be on the alert! :) Unsubscribe when you arrive! :)

I agree with sire that Lanka is a crucian country and there is something to see there. And it’s better to take a tour with an excursion program - a 4-day trip around the island with sightseeing, and then a hotel beach vacation for the rest of the time.
But in terms of evening, and even more so nightlife - a complete zero. Not Thailand, obviously. If you do not pick up a normal company in the hotel, then in the evenings it is rather boring. In general, a quiet "colonial" holiday.
Now about the local population and in particular about the beggars mentioned by sashenka1986. Sri Lanka is the "tear of India". And the culture here is probably 80 percent Indian. And what is India without beggars and beggars. But they don’t consider tourists stupid, they just try to earn a living with a minimum of costs. And you need to take it for granted, such a mentality.
