Where exactly to go in June-July?
Good afternoon everyone!
I would very much like to receive an answer from experienced Sri Lankans)) I want to visit Sh-L for the first time. But vacation only in June-July is obtained. I have heard about the rainy season. What is tropical rain? I’m more worried about the opportunity to swim in the ocean, I’m worried precisely because of the giant waves ((It seems that on the island this season is different for different coasts ... Can anyone tell me which resorts you can go to at this time with the hope of a beach holiday? Maybe some bays I would be very grateful for the answers! I don’t want to waste 10 days sitting under an umbrella on the shores of a raging ocean ((

Good afternoon!
1) there are no tropical heavy rains in Sri Lanka. Rain can fall on average from 15 minutes to 2 hours. Doesn't stress at all. When it rains, it's warm and good. 10-15 minutes after the end of the rain - already dry.
... but again, the weather is a capricious thing :)
2) by the ocean... The Indian Ocean is open almost everywhere. Therefore, even if the wave is low, it is still addictive.
The western and southern coasts are more "wavy" in summer.
Now, if you want a calm ocean and swim - this is for you to the east, in Trincomal, Nilavelli, Passikudu ...
3) the nuance of the east coast: it is quiet and calm there. There is practically no tourist infrastructure, except for 4-5 hotels. There is only the ocean, white sand, sun, palm trees and silence ... If you are ready for just such a vacation, then welcome :)
4) on the way to the east coast, quite a long drive from the airport. Therefore, I advise you to split it into 1-2 days and see an interesting excursion along the way

thanks a lot!
I will think, or else "I want and prick" ...
about seeing the excursion along the way, you also need to think)) although the flight is 10-12 hours + immediately on the tour?))
I am not a fan of sitting still, but water is EVERYTHING for me!
I understand that if you go east, then excursions from there will be long and tiring?

I also asked about the weather before the trip. And I got almost the same answer - it's okay ... 15 - 20 minutes ... it dries immediately ...
We had rain from 14.00 until the night with short breaks. It was like that for 2 days. And it was 2 excursion days! Going on excursions in the rain is very uncomfortable! Just like sitting sweaty on the bus. I had to urgently purchase umbrellas (at an inflated price).
And then we returned to the hotel for a very long time. Because again, because of the rain, the road was almost invisible! Once he even stopped altogether and waited for about 15 minutes until the downpour subsided a little.
And that was in February! The driest month
I got the impression that the excursions are long and tiring from any coast of Sri Lanka )))

it looks like a lottery)) either you are lucky with the weather or not ... regardless of the season, coast and bays))

I will say from personal experience that immediately on the excursion after the flight is of course difficult. I myself (and always advise my tourists) to take the so-called "early settlement" after the flight. That is, after you have arrived, you are taken to a hotel near the airport for relaxation. You sleep peacefully there, take a shower, have breakfast and at 10 in the morning you go to travel. You can also take a whole day at the Negombo resort near the airport. Then you will DEFINITELY rest and be ready for the next journey :)
And about the weather, as I wrote, "the weather is a capricious thing." In Kyiv, too, at the end of March, no one expected snowfall :))))))))))))
On the other hand, in London it is always foggy and raining... and there are plenty of tourists :))))))

At the end of June last year, I spent a week near Trincomalee (Pigeon Island Hotel). And rested on the beach, and visited Sigiriya, and Dambulla. And in Trincomale there is something to see, and in the vicinity. Not to mention the coral island in front of the hotel, where we swam with masks.

We were in June in Unawatuna (in the south) 8 days lying on the beach + 6 days of excursions around the island (ordered there on the spot). In Unawatuna there is a small wave, but swimming is very even nothing. It rained 3 times in 2 weeks. Once for 2 hours, the rest - 5 minutes. Ready to answer questions.

thanks everyone for the replies. I'm afraid that the beach + excursions (namely as part of the tour) I will not pull financially. the budget is limited ((the main thing for me is the beach and there on the spot to look for trips ...

Beware of mosquitoes, invisible creatures! They bit us and not only us in April to such an extent that the scabies lasted three weeks. These creatures live in the sand. Our mosquitoes are happiness in comparison with them

Go wherever you want, don't be afraid of the waves! There are lagoons everywhere, in which there are no waves! The main thing is to make friends with the beach-boys - they will tell you and take you there for a ridiculous price by tuk-tuk! ))) We were last year in June in a very budget hotel in the south - Sogalla Beach, in the ocean near the hotel - just jumping on the waves (also cool, I'll tell you))), and so to swim - near the Unawatuna lagoon (a lot tourists, untwisted and more civilized), but we liked Jungle Beach more - a beach in the jungle - that's where kkkrrrassotischschcha! And there are no waves at all! ) And we went on an excursion - through the beach-boys (2-day excursion to Kandy - $ 70 cheaper than the tour operator)
