I was afraid to take a scooter, but some took (I mean Europeans). I also saw several downed scooters in two weeks, sometimes with a sad outcome. There are no traffic rules at all. The main thing is that everyone is afraid of a big bus, the one that travels between cities - there are no rules for it from the word AT ALL. Even the locals treat him with great respect. Learn it. Good luck

I agree that it's not safe to ride a scooter there. There tuk-tuks are very inexpensive, it's better to ride them.

this is the right decision. Local they know how to move in such chaos. Tuk-tuks are really not expensive - just bargain, the price from the declared one almost always becomes half as much. Get to know the locals there - one of them will take you under his wing to provide overseas food and various services (excursions, markets, etc.) and they will generally take you everywhere on their tuk-tuk for free. It is better to see on the spot whether you can or not, and do not overestimate your strength. Also keep in mind that there are actually no sidewalks - from the gate the exit immediately onto the roadway and who and where you will meet in the next minute is a big question.

Still unusual left-hand traffic. We were at a loss even how to get on the bus. Large buses for the locals almost never stop, but only slow down for the exit, they stopped us. We used mostly buses, sometimes tuk tuks if we were close.

The fare depends on the class of the bus. A red sign above the windshield - at the cost of the train, the rest are more expensive and more comfortable

I completely agree with sugak70, traffic on the roads of Sri Lanka is very dangerous and unpredictable. And what is the Big Bus we experienced in all its glory. Miraculously survived! We were walking at one in the morning along the quiet streets on the outskirts of Hikkaduwa, and suddenly, with the speed of sound and with a terrible signal, TWO rushes right at us !!! bus nearby. The street is narrow, we barely had time to jump into someone's yard and watched the races of two buses with fear. If they had hesitated even for a second, then there would not have been two lovers of traveling the world. It's good that before the trip we prepared, read everything, watched the video and had an idea about the Big Bus. By the way, they don't always stop at stops. We had to jump on the go! And the ride itself in this bus is still an attraction!
Thoughts about the scooter were, the rental is not expensive. But, it is very dangerous and you need to leave your passport at the rental office.

As you were told above, the easiest way to have a great vacation on the island and see the most interesting places for next to nothing will be helped by locals. We met in the first days of rest with several local families. We were shown a lot of interesting things on the tuk-tuk. We were treated to local dishes and seafood. Sri Lankans are very kind and hospitable, welcome guests and consider it an honor to receive a guest in their home.
So get acquainted with the local Sri Lankan family and your vacation was a success!

We took a minibus, in the cities it is difficult, chaotic traffic. There is also a mileage limit in addition to the rental price. I don't recommend driving in the dark. In the mountains (Nuwara Eliya, Sigiriya) it is dangerous, the roads are narrow, frantic local buses fly out of the corner.
