Crossed the border together with such a character (with a work visa). Because of him, a regular bus was kept at the border for more than 2 hours!!! Checks are carried out not by customs officers, but by the border police. They demanded to show everything: an invitation to work (original with stamps), confirmation of the place of residence during work, etc. They scolded the consul in Kyiv very much, who, opening visas, looks at the documents through his fingers!!!
True, this character crossed the Schengen zone for the first time (maybe this also played for close inspection ...)
And most importantly (!) now, in connection with the Syrian refugees, inspections and border crossings have become more complicated: everything is checked even more closely, and fingers and documents (everything, everything !!!) This was not the case before.

A work visa is for work, and a tourist visa is for tourism.
Poor Poles issue thousands of such "working" visas, and quite honest tourists suffer as a result, as in the previous answer.
