Let me ask a question now.
zhdanova10, what is the best location in Funchal to combine a beach holiday with a city exploration? What month do you recommend?
аватар 86jjj
Whoops, in Funchal.
Let me rephrase my previous question: in what location in Madeira is it better to combine urban and beach holidays?
аватар zhdanova10
86jjj, I was there twice: in January and in October. Both times they lived in Funchal, in the center, not in the Lido area, where most of the hotel complexes are. In January, they swam only when they went to Porto Monish. In October - both in Funchal and Mashika.
We were without a car. Public transport is excellent, you can get everywhere.
I'm in Funchal, a better hotel with a beach. This is the capital: museums, festivals, shops, parks... And it's easy to get to all ends for an excursion. All the rest are small towns that can be bypassed for a couple of hours...

Natalie, thank you so much for your reply. I have been dreaming of Madeira for a very long time and your remark about public transport is a balm for me, who always travels without a car.
And thanks for the great location.

Now I'm in Madeira, so I can answer questions myself)) Now the ocean is warm, today they haven't been cut out of the water all morning. But, in general, Madeira is not a beach holiday. Machico is good, but the beach is tiny. This is not Las Teresitas in Tenerife. In Funchal itself there is a beach near the yellow fort, not far from the center, where there are slabs and stones (there is both a paid part and a free part). There is Farmrza on the outskirts of the city. Farmosa - a quarry where corals are needed. But, the ocean on Farmosa is quite calm, it’s good to swim there.

Funchal is very nice. Beautiful and big city. Take a car only if you feel confident on the serpentines.
аватар camomille
Accommodation is best taken in the historic center of Funchal. As a landmark - the cathedral.
аватар camomille
Hotels with beaches - this is the Lido area. I didn't really like him. All the most interesting - in the center of Funchal. Been to several small towns - nothing impressive. Therefore, if there is no goal of solitude or unity with nature, then only Funchal.

Many thanks to Camomille, I copied everything to a file, I will know.
Have a nice rest!
Please write here what else is very good to see on the island, I plan to vacation in Madeira.

86jjj, thanks.

We bought 4 tours (English): Valley of the Nuns, West, East and Levada. The prices are pleasing - for three, all excursions are 345 euros. Local agency Lido tour. They went to the valley of the nuns for the first time. The impression is good, the excursion is pleasant. Pickup, 7 people and a driver-guide. He articulates well, speaks clearly in simple, easy-to-understand phrases. I was glad that they went on an excursion. Along the road near the most beautiful observation deck, the breakwater over the precipice was damaged in two places. This is for those who will drive a rented car. You won't be able to reach the observatory, which offers the most beautiful view, by regular bus.

Question: eat in a cafe for 3 with a glass of wine or beer - about 50 euros (+/-). There is a budget option - Pingo Dose supermarkets. There is cooking and a foot court. You can take any alcohol, juice, etc. from the supermarket with you. All food by weight - 12 euros per kg. Potatoes, salmon or dorado will be at the same price. The food in the supermarkets is different: in the La Vy shopping center it is normal, in the shopping center opposite the Lavadores market it is disgusting, although the shopping network is the same.

Thank you so much! I rewrote everything to myself in a file, and if there are any other moments, just unsubscribe here, please, there are not many good tips. Maybe another beach near Funchal found?
(Madeira and Mont Saint Michel are two of my next projects)

If you are afraid of heights, it is best not to go to Levady. We took du norte. This is a simple route, absolutely no physical exertion - 1.5 hours, height difference 60m. It is a very pleasant walk, but in some places you have to walk along a steep path, 50 centimeters long. On one side there will be a ravine and a rock, on the other a cliff. Therefore, dry weather is preferable. Trekking shoes are not needed for this levada, ordinary sneakers will do. But, don't repeat my mistake and don't wear sneakers with breathable soles with holes. In some areas it will be wet and small pebbles will clog the holes.

Thank you Camomille! I’ll go to levadas only as part of an excursion, I won’t risk it myself. Although I love hiking. What tasty things did you try on the island, what would you recommend? What did you like and what not?
Thank you )

We also went to the levada as part of an excursion. My subjective opinion: do not waste time on buses. Traveling around Madeira - either by car or excursions. Tours are cheap and of good quality. You will be shown the most beautiful places that you will not see on the bus. We were lucky - we went to the first agency that came across and everything turned out to be ok. Excursions in mini-groups up to 10 people per minibus. We went to Machica and Monte on our own. If there is little time and you have to choose between the botanical garden and the Monte garden, choose the latter. We bought a couple of exotic fruits (green, I don’t remember the names) - I don’t remember the names. Nothing good. Everything tasty is familiar to us, as it is exported. Mango is good. I liked the eshpada with a baked banana, we ate it almost every day)) got to the point that you don’t want to look at the fish anymore))) Their cod is delicious. The meat is just like everywhere else, nothing special. Madera is for everybody.
Tasting was very tasty. Bought in a supermarket - not really.

Poncho - I didn’t like it, but the liqueurs from the valley of the nuns are very good. But here everything is subjective.
If you love football, go to the Cristiano Ronaldo Museum. Liked.
In general, 2 weeks flashed by in a flash. Leaving tomorrow :(
86jjj, I wish you to definitely visit Madeira. The island is fabulous!
аватар 86jjj
camomille thank you very much, super! I really have been dreaming of visiting Madeira for a very long time, so your advice will ALL be useful to me.
It probably takes at least 7 days to deal with this island.
Did you go down on sleds? Those that are urban and led by two escorts.
About green fruits. Chirimoya?
аватар zhdanova10
Probably cheremoya, or anon. I really liked the bright strawberry flavor! Bought later on other trips and enjoyed)
We enjoyed the madeira museum, with a tasting and then continuing to the cafe.
I also do not recommend the Botanical Garden, but if you are a fan of orchids, then visit their museum next to the Botanic Garden.
If you like to walk, then from Monte Park you can go down the street or levadas (there they are completely safe, but unsurveyed, just canals in the forest). And to go up by bus (about 2 euros) or cable car (it was about 15)
аватар camomille
No, they didn't go sledding. Sledding in Monte. We were there on Sunday, the sleigh was not working.
аватар 86jjj
Natalie, thanks for the tips! I liked chirimoya, because I ate it in a southern country bought from the market, and not in our supermarket)
Since you are all here already .. of course I can google it .. but don’t swim in the winter in Madeira - what period is this? Until November? From April?
аватар camomille
August September is the warmest ocean. The water is warm now. If it is not frozen, swimming for 30 minutes is quite comfortable. Open the tourtell website. Complete weather data and statistics for 3 years are collected there.

Thank you! Good evening )

In conclusion: customs inspection both in Funchal and in Lisbon loyal. In my hand luggage, there were many miniatures of 50-80 ml, creams, etc. (more than 10 pcs.) and 4 cans of sardines of 120 ml each. In Funchal, my luggage was not questioned at all, in Lisbon my backpack was checked. I immediately admitted honestly: yes, I am violating, I am transporting sardines. The customs officer laughed, gutted the entire backpack, but missed it.
аватар camomille
So you can buy sardines in a regular supermarket, not in a grocery store.
аватар 86jjj
Camomille, you are lucky. But it's worth a try.
Now I (in Bari with WizzAir) brought more than 10 creams, balms, oils of all kinds, and they also allowed me, and the backpack was more than it should be, and nothing. Probably, the customs is glad to see us, after covid :)
аватар camomille
I know people who used to bring sardines from Lisbon in hand luggage even before covid. Although, probably, the human factor decides everything here. They can force it to be thrown out.
In Germany, on domestic EU flights, documents are not checked upon departure - only the ticket. She flew from Cologne and Dusseldorf, and her friends from Berlin.
аватар zhdanova10
And not only in Germany! We flew from Vienna to Tallinn - no one even mentioned the passport) Dyvina... But from Finland to Croatia, and from Croatia to Austria, during check-in, they were not given a boarding pass, but papers with which you had to go to the check-in desk and there already get a boarding pass after checking the passport (
аватар camomille
In Portugal, documents were checked, but nominally. No one watches at all for 90 days. Registering for a flight using a passport, once I decided to try to travel not using a passport, but through a visa. Passed without question. And I remember how ours were interrogated with passion on flights from Ukraine.
