The question is not entirely clear :) You can stay anywhere, there is a lot of housing for every taste. It all depends on your budget and goals.

By climate. According to reviews - it is warmer in the south.

Yes, not especially. The climate is different on the coast and in the mountains, and the coast itself (temperature, mountains and greenery) is about the same everywhere.
If the plans are exclusively for a beach holiday, then there are very few such places - a bulk beach in Machico, in Funchal itself in Lido and lava pools in Porto Manish. The rest of the places are either rocky, or far from civilization, or the beaches are very small. Watching children swim. Many hotels have piers right on the rocks and ladders into the water, like in a pool, we adults swam normally, we also saw children.

Thanks a lot! As a result, they booked a hotel in Ponta do Sol, it seems that they have their own beach. The plans are to climb everywhere)). think. Is there any public transport? Or just car rental?

Urban, or rather island, transport exists! Buses are comfortable and run on time.
We were going to take a car, but we looked at the roads and decided to travel by bus and take trips from local small agencies. Most excursions are divided into Tours and Walks. The latter are very popular - the guide goes with tourists along the levadas or between the peaks. There are difficult routes, but there are those where an escort is not needed at all. "Tours" are trips to all sorts of beautiful places. We had a driver in a bus, in the cabin we were with my husband and four Englishmen. This driver-guide did not speak English, but he so wanted to show us all the best that he sang and jumped out of the car to pick up a bouquet of strelitzia for women, except that he didn’t dance :))) In one day, we drove around the west of the island, for the other - the east, bays, peaks, viewing platforms. All this costs humanely, the main thing is not to get involved with "Russian" agencies, where the price is twice as high.

In Funchal there is also a City Sightseen sightseeing bus with a Russian audio guide, it travels around Funchal and stops at the neighboring town of Camara de Lobos

It is interesting to visit the botanical garden. It's cheaper to get there by bus, but it's more interesting to take the teleferico from the coast in Funchal. There is a single ticket for sitesin bass and teleferico.
