Is Pattaya really a very dirty sea and should I go to the islands?
In many reviews, it is strongly advised not to go to city beaches, because. they are dirty. Is it so hopeless?

Yes, it's true. Especially urban, the beaches of hotels are better, but the sea is muddy everywhere, garbage sometimes swims. But Tai is still beautiful, even with such a sea! then there, and when everyone had already looked at Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Chang. We swam in the sea 2 times, mainly in the pool, and went a couple of times to the island of Koh Lan, it is the closest from Pattaya. And the rest of the time on there were excursions.

Bitter truth! Only Ko Lan! Nearby and inexpensive. But the water is super!

It is not necessary to go to Pattaya first, you can only go to the islands. If you are not afraid of a more expensive vacation. Excursions there and exotic are no worse. And only from Phuket, for example, the most popular sea excursions among tourists to neighboring islands are possible. And it’s close and inexpensive to rush to Malaysia, many do this. Yes, the difference is that Phuket is in the Indian Ocean, and the water is not just clean, but of amazing color, diving and snorkeling is super - "ear", not even the island itself. Koh Samui is also cool, but quieter, and Koh Chang is generally lovely, small, service "for the Germans." In general, there is one rule for Tai - it's great everywhere, so decide for yourself, in any case, you won't go wrong.

Truth!!!! I swam there, one and the last time I did it in Pattaya. Why go there at all if you need the sea? There are so many islands in Thailand .... And if you need nightlife, entertainment, go bars and so on, then you are there!

Similan!!!!!!

If you want to relax in Pattaya, then you need to choose a good hotel with its own beach, where it is monitored and cleaned, but it’s not worth spending the whole vacation there at all, it’s better to combine the rest and be sure to visit the islands, and for Pattaya a couple of days is enough to understand , what it is! Be sure to go on an excursion to the River Kwai if you are in Pattaya, it's interesting!

I advise you to choose a hotel between Jomtien (south of Pattaya) and the central part of the city.
On the "main" city beaches - dirty. In Jomtien, they say, it was once normal, but now it's the same nonsense as in the central part!
In the place I have named, there are several expensive hotels of the ROYAL CLIFF chain, as well as quite budget Cozy Beach (IMHO, one of the best "three rubles"), Adriatic Palace and Pattaya Park.
There the beach will not be perfectly clean either ... But still more tolerant than in the center. In addition - next to the hotel, not across the street.
And further! Many people talk about the "muddy sea" in Pattaya. That doesn't scare me at all! "Muddy" is not dirty! )))
Another option is to choose a hotel closer to the city ferry to the island and ride it to the island beach.

It's not obligatory. From Kosi Beach you can take a boat and drive to the island in 20 minutes. But it is beneficial only for a crowd of at least 8 people.

About the last review: Profitable-not profitable - this is not about pattaya. If you pay for the boat yourself, it's like a taxi in Moscow for 10 minutes. About the penultimate one - about Jomtein beach: Large coastline with many not bad hotels 10 minutes from the center. The same sea, only less garbage floats. I never went swimming. Stayed at the Dor Shaadaa hotel. The brightest five in Thai style. In Pattaya only for a night's rest. River Kwai (not an expensive excursion from Pattaya) is the most magical experience. And of course the islands are the islands! The further, the more interesting! Have a good trip!

Dirtier beaches have not seen ANYWHERE!!!! We only swam in the pool. Everything was compensated by a trip for a week to the island of Koh Chang! The beach is fine and soft sand (like flour), the Gulf of Thailand overlooking the small islands, warm water without any "evil spirits". Come off in full-PARADISE! Very different hotels - from sheds to palaces! Recommend: Sea vew Koh-Chang reasort@ spa - solid 4 stars, perfect beach, exceptional staff, breakfast buffet, good restaurant in the hotel and next door - right on the beach grilled seafood in the evening... Let's go again!

The beaches in Pattaya itself are really dirty and you can’t swim on them. You can sunbathe. A beach place (2 sunbeds and an umbrella) costs 30 baht (about $1). There are two options for swimming in the sea. The first is a trip to the islands. With an ordinary double-deck boat, you will spend 45 minutes on this. and 20 baht. You can get there by speedboat in 20 minutes. and much more expensive - 200 baht. The second option is to choose a hotel outside of Pattaya, but within its reach. The water there will also not be transparent, but already such that swimming is possible. Just check in advance what kind of communication the hotel you have chosen has with Pattaya, whether minibuses go there from it. Some (for example, "Botany Beach Resort") have regular and frequent flights, the schedule is at the reception. The cost is 60 baht (a little less than $2). While "Sea Sand San", located almost next to it, does not provide such a service.

complete nonsense about dirty beaches. read, believed, made plans for constant trips to the islands.
in real life, it turned out to be the opposite. I rolled onto the island once - to see, it’s not worth wasting a whole day for this. of course, you will not swim in central Pattaya, but not at all because of the "dirt". it's just that there is a narrow coastline along which a busy road stretches, which is not very pleasant. But Jomtien is a wonderful place, excellent sand (but not white, of course).
I admit that a bag can float in the water (not more than one per day :) ) or something else blown away by the wind, but this is normal, there are many thousands of tourists. but in the evening, the Thais will clean the beach with a rake and in the morning it will be like new

The beach itself and the sand are without question, but the sea wants to leave the best ... to put it mildly. :) Especially when compared with the Mediterranean or Aegean, where crystal clear turquoise water. But I still adore Tai and dream of returning, but you can go to the sea Egypt hit the road!

It's just that many tourists confuse completely DIFFERENT concepts: the concept of "dirty beach" is one thing and the concept of "muddy (for natural reasons) sea" is quite another.
The sea (more precisely, the coast of the bay) is ugly, the water is opaque. It is a fact. But the state of the water according to sanitary standards allows you to swim in it. It is not dirty, it is just cloudy due to natural impurities) and not as azure as in the Mediterranean or Red Seas. I assure you, the more beautiful water of our Black Sea coast will be much worse in terms of chemical composition.
The state of the beaches in the center leaves much to be desired, but not at all as terrible as some say. A bad external impression is most often formed precisely by the “non-marketable” type of water.

Pepper, how exactly you formulated the essence! :) I completely agree.
