what to visit on your own, and what is better with a guide?
I'm going to Italy in June for the first time. I will live in Rome. What are the best excursions to visit on your own?

it always makes sense to start your tour of a new capital by buying a 2-day ticket for a tourist bus with an e-guide in Russian - it costs 15 euros, goes every 30 minutes and allows you to get off / on at any stop for a more detailed sightseeing. It's better than the daytime sightseeing tour of the city, which we started with a trip on crowded public transport :(
I think the evening tour with a guide is worthy of attention (especially if Vsevolod conducts it - he can be found through Gartour). Most likely, a guide will not interfere in the Vatican if you did not study it in detail before the trip. In the Colosseum, there are convenient e-guides in Russian - a guide is not needed there.
If you are going on a day trip to Pompeii, then our "classmates" were not enthusiastic about it, so I can not recommend it ...

Thank you for the answer. Can you tell me approximately where the tourist bus stop is? I chose three excursions: "Classic and Imperial Rome", "Island of Capri" and "Naples-Pompeii". Is it worth going to them in a group?

there are tourist bus stops at all important sights - the Colosseum, the Vatican, etc. I know exactly what is at the arch in front of Piazzo di Poppolo (the closest stop to Villa Borghese) and of course at the station. There are maps at the stops.
Regarding standard excursions, we did not visit all of them, but we had a more intense travel schedule. If you go only to Rome, I think 3 excursions will be completely untiring. And from the point of view of price, of course, group tours are more attractive - for example, the cost of an individual 3-hour tour of Rome with a guide and a.m. costs from 170 to 360 euros.

we were on a tour of the Colosseum and ancient Rome, I think it's better with a guide, because. they tell a lot of interesting things, and then leave them in the center near the famous fountain and walk around Rome yourself !!! I recommend MANDATORY to visit the VATICAN and better also with a Guide, because. This is an amazing and interesting tour! I disagree that Pompeii is not interesting!!! We were there, a very ancient city and the proximity of the volcano Visuvius, then on the other side to Naples ... we were lucky with the guides, maybe they told very interesting things)))

that you, I didn’t say that Pompeii is uninteresting! I meant that our tour was poorly thought out, or people were too overloaded with previous impressions to "penetrate" .. If you have the strength and time, Pompeii is a must visit!

Tell me, can one easily get into all the museums? Or preferably with a group???

you can go to museums alone, but it's better with a guide. waste time if you have not previously studied the booklet and expositions, especially as a rule there are always exhibitions in museums. The Vatican is a must! I recommend if you have time to go to parks such as Vila Borghese Vila Albini! Well, shopping, of course, although if in Rome it’s just a pity to spend less than 3 days on shopping.

I'm not sure that you can just buy a ticket to the Vatican and go through - the crowds are unmeasured there, our group went in quickly only because they were almost the first since the opening, tickets were bought in advance and the reservation was paid - a place in line!
after 2 hours at the entrance there was such a sea of people that the police pulled ribbons along the sidewalks on the approaches to the Vatican and the people were lined up in long processions like soviet mausoleums ..

Indeed, a great way to get to know Rome on your own is a 2-day city cicle bus, all the more so. that he visits the beautiful and famous corners of the city, which are far from the center. In the Vatican, be sure to take a guide or tour. so as not to stand in very long lines, and if you are not an "art professor", then a guided tour will be very exciting, maybe. You can talk about the Vatican forever. In the prince, in all the galleries (eg Borghese) it is better to go with guides: it will save time on buying tickets, and will give interesting knowledge. And all the excavations can be easily seen by yourself along with the guide :)
PS and Pompeii is a very exciting excursion. I liked it more than the trip to Florence.

eh, I read and I regret that I could not cover the "whole list")) yes, there are many people who are fanatically in love with Italy - they go there year after year, and always find something new! it looks like I will join their ranks)) and regarding shopping, if you are interested, Rome is a very expensive city. Although it is precisely around the Vatican on the adjacent streets that there are many Asian ruins, where quite tolerable knitwear is sold for just a penny, and there are decent shops where you can buy an excellent suit within 100 euros. Guides, of course, do not tell about these quarters, but send them shopping on Via del Corso, where goods are not particularly cheap.
