Please advise on self-booking tickets to the Vatican
ItalyRome
The questions are as follows: 1) is biglietteriamusei.vatican.va the official website for selling tickets? 2) How does the tour go - is the group led by a real guide or are they given audio guides to everyone and you can walk as you like? 3) Should I order the Vatican Gardens separately? As I understand it, this is a separate excursion and the ticket costs 17 euros. I remember looking at ticket prices a few months ago and saw that there are excursions to the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel with gardens. But now I can't find any such tickets. 4) St. Peter's Basilica - Do I need to purchase a priority entry ticket? How to climb the dome of the cathedral? There is a guided tour of the cathedral on Ticketbar with a climb to the dome, but it is impossible to buy tickets for it. 5) Is one day spent in the Vatican enough? 6) Are there any nuances or organizational aspects that should be taken into account when visiting the Vatican.

I won’t answer the points, but I’ll say from experience: we arrived at the Vatican Museums at 9 am in September and stood in line for 2 hours. The ticket is bought at the box office, you can pay by card, or you can pay in cash. If this is a group tour, then a guide walks with the group. If you are an independent traveler, you can take an audio guide, but it is in English. On our visit, tickets to the gardens were not sold, but you will still see the Sistine Chapel, since you cannot pass by. In the Vatican Museums, everyone is carried in one big stream.
Entrance to St. Peter's Basilica is free, you only need to go through metal detectors, like at the airport. No matter how long the queue may seem to you, they move so fast that everyone who wants to pass in 15 minutes. There is an exit to the Cathedral directly from the Sistine Chapel, then there is no need to go through the frames. One day is more than enough. We recommend that you climb the dome of the Cathedral (you can take the elevator, or you can walk). There are amazing panoramas from there. In addition, there is a post office, a cafe and a toilet on the dome. And, remember that the Cathedral is a functioning temple. Therefore, the shoulders and knees, both for men and women, must be covered.

2) As far as I remember, the entrance to the Vatican Museums is in a separate queue with e-tickets. In my opinion, without any guides. We have never bought online.
3) There is a separate excursion to the Vatican Gardens, definitely with a guide.
4) There are no tickets for St. Peter's Basilica. Free admission. You go up to the dome either by elevator + on foot, or on foot. The difference in cost used to be 2-3 euros. Dress at the entrance.
5) One day at the Vatican is enough.
6) In the case of mass or religious events, the entrance to the Cathedral may be closed. It’s worth coming in the morning and seeing if the line is big and open, not to be persuaded by ticket sellers (guides) who promise to skip the line to go from the Cathedral to the Museums along a short path (otherwise we somehow went around the entire Vatican)
I advise you to buy a ticket via the Internet to Villa Borghese - a lot of fun and you can get in only by appointment

Thanks a lot for the replies.
Did I understand correctly that in the Vatican Museums, as such, there are no groups organized with a guide?
It seems that people are not allowed to walk around the gardens - excursions are taken by transport.

I’ll add a little ... I was passing through Rome, there was no time to stand in line, there are a lot of offices that sell tickets with skip-the-line access and with guides in different languages .... the ticket cost 25 euros, the Vatican and the Sextine Chapel. Then on your own St. Peter's Basilica.
Regarding the dome, my friend wanted to go up, I don’t remember anything about the elevator (for some reason it seemed to me that it didn’t exist or it didn’t go to the very top, the point is not that) we all climbed on foot, many people felt bad (August) the lift is very narrow, without ventilation and air conditioning. People with a weak heart, pressure, etc. ... you need to think about whether to climb or not

we are probably talking about a different dome .... there is just an observation deck, without mail, cafes, etc. ...

Lud_mila, bought on www.ticketone.it
Here is the exact instruction: https://italy4.me/lazio/roma/galereya-borgeze-bilet.html
AllOverTheWorld, there is only one dome in the Cathedral))) Just on the roof, where the elevator takes you (you have to walk to the dome itself and it's hard), there is a toilet and a cafe. and mail)
From the reviews: "There are 2 options to climb the Dome. The first option is to walk all 551 steps on your own (that is, with legs), or do half the way on the elevator. On foot, you still have to overcome 320 steps. After reading comments on the Internet, what to do on foot the whole way will be difficult, we decided to use the elevator (the cost of climbing to the dome with an elevator is 8 euros, without an elevator - 6 euros), as it turned out later, in vain, the climb is not so difficult if you are in the most normal, average physical shape...
We also linger on the central platform (here, by the way, there is a post office, a souvenir shop and a cafe) in order to once again better see the statues of saints on the colonnade, imagine the number of statues on the entire colonnade - 140!"

it is difficult in the sense that it is stuffy and hot there when it is about 45 degrees outside ... (I wrote that they were in August) the steps themselves are not terrible .... just climbing in a narrow corridor without windows and air conditioning, to put it mildly, is not quite easy . (precisely about the path that is only on the steps.
