You can buy tickets and book a hotel on your own, without an agency. It will be cheaper, that's for sure. But Phuket is not the cheapest place in Thailand. We lived there in Sugar Palm Resort Kata 3*. Great place (everything is nearby: the sea, food, and transport), good price, normal conditions.

Excellent Karon beach, many cafes and macaroons, cheap travel agency "LADA" - Russian speaker. I really liked the excursion to the J. Bond islands with a stop at the island of gypsies (there is the cheapest pearls)

And we liked the beaches of Kata and Kata Noi more. More comfortable, less wind and waves, not by the road. Excursions to the islands of Bond and Similan were taken from ChipTour (they called, they brought us vouchers to the hotel). There are a lot of good reviews about them. We have joined :)
