We liked the hotel "Gala" ( http://gala-hotel.com/) - I advise you to take the old, Stalinist building, where the price-quality ratio is good. The hotel has a good restaurant Poirot (in the old town in general it is very bad with public catering). I can’t say that the hotel was close to the old city, but quite a lot of minibuses go from the neighboring (parallel) street in that direction.
