The best Bulgarian excursion is to Istanbul :))
It is convenient to travel from Nessebar, closer than, for example, from Albena. It used to cost $ 70, I don’t know how much now.

If you are traveling in May, it’s time to go to the rose valley: see flowering plantations, visit the rose museum, cosmetics factory (buy it there at the lowest price!) I recommend taking rose water hydrogel - you can’t get it anywhere else, but the thing is cool. The same tour includes a visit to Shipka, Gabrovo and Velikotyrnov - with an amazing laser show! And see many more interesting things! I traveled with my 10 year old daughter. Of course, we were a little tired, especially climbing Shipka, but it was worth it! And everywhere we were fed very cool on excursions, so this is also a gastronomic tour of Bulgaria. (Combine 2/4 of the territory in a day. It is set once a week - so find out in advance so as not to miss it!
Also, be sure to visit the palace of the Hungarian princess - the GORGEOUS garden, + wine tasting from the royal cellar. Be sure to buy Snow wine there (it is cheaper in the palace than in other places). We later saw him in the duty room .. more expensive than good cognac, and the wine is cool.!

Correction to the author of Zelma - not the Hungarian princess, but the Romanian Queen Mary, this is in Balchik. From Nessebar drive approx. 3 hours.
I would go from Nessebar - to Sozopol - on my own, take a walk, go to Pomorie - to the estuary with mud, there are such excursions along the Ropotami river, to the Bulgarian village - where they are treated to traditional dishes and wine flows like a river, and also - an old rite - dancing on coals.
In general, Nessebar itself is so interesting that you just need to spend a lot of time on it. I also liked to sail on a boat from Nessebar to Sunny Beach. I will add that you can travel everywhere yourself, it is most convenient to rent a car, before arming yourself with a card. You can drive to Sofia from Burgas in 1 night, but IMHO - there is nothing to do there, it's better to Shipka and the Rose Valley.

Nessebar is the southern coast, it is much poorer from a cultural point of view than the northern one (Balchik, Veliko Tarnovo). Unless it's convenient to go to Turkey. Or take excursions for a day or two - along the North coast ... In general, you can wander around Nessebar for a long time. We took excursions at the museum at the entrance to the old city - an hour and a half with a guide cost 30 lev (1 euro = 1.95 lev), entrance to the temples is included (but without photo / video, it must be paid separately).
I join Natalia from Kyiv: I advise you to go to Sozopol on your own. Tickets can be bought right at the bus stop (before entering old Nessebar - don't miss it).
